Match 1: SmackDown 2009 - Rey Mysterio vs. Batista
I'm sure nearly
everybody who is reading this review knows about the history between
both men so let's get right into the match itself. This was one of
Batista's final matches of his career and occurred during the closing
month of 2009. It was your typical television main event that you would
expect from Batista which means average in ring action. Throughout the
better part of the match, Batista dominated Mysterio until finally
Mysterio rolled up Batista to pick up the quick win. Pretty slow match
but it's not like anyone should expect anything that'll blow their
minds. This was also one of the only matches they've had against one
another and it's a shame since the feud had potential written all over
it.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: **3/4
Match 2: SmackDown 2010 - Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels
This is the second encounter between both men with the first being
during the Eddie Guerrero tribute show back in 2005. However, the times
have changed and now in 2010, the two find themselves battling each
other once again with different circumstances this time. The pace
started off slow but gradually picked up with it's back and forth action
throughout. But just as soon as I felt the match hit it's breaking
point with a Sweet Chin Music delivered by Michaels on Mysterio who just
hit the 619, Batista comes out and lands a Spear on Mysterio which
called for a no decision by the referee. It's unfortunate that the two
never really had a match against each other that defined their abilities
but this was still a nice and memorable match.
Winner: No decision
Rating: ***
Match 3: Royal Rumble 2010 - World Heavyweight Championship - The Undertaker (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
In a rare occurrence, The Undertaker takes on a fan favorite in Rey
Mysterio in the undercard main event match. To no one's shock, Rey
Mysterio pretty much had to carry the entire match as The Undertaker was
pretty banged up and also, there was a risk of The Undertaker being
injured before his WrestleMania match which would be an absolute
tragedy. Because of this, both men restricted a lot of their movies and
for the most part, kept the match a safe one and in my opinion, there is
absolutely nothing wrong with that. As long as you can pull out a great
match, then you're good and that is exactly what they did here. There
was so much back and forth action between the two here and the way that
both men worked with the crowd was pretty damn spectacular. The
Undertaker pulled out the victory after hitting Mysterio with the Last
Ride to retain his championship.
Winner: The Undertaker
Rating: ***
Match 4: SmackDown 2010 - Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler
In a qualifying match to earn a spot in the Elimination Chamber,
Mysterio takes on a young and highly talented Dolph Ziggler. The match
went very well and much like their Summerslam 2009 match only the stakes
here were different. Little downtime throughout the match which by that
I mean the action kept on moving and moving and made for a very
enjoyable match. Mysterio got the win with another roll up.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ***1/4
Match 5: Over the Limit 2010 - Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
The rules for this match are as follow: If Mysterio wins, then Punk
must shave his head. However, if Punk wins, then Mysterio must join the
Straight Edge Society. With this stipulation added, the match's interest
level got raised through the roof as these two are already finely tuned
athletes who can easily put on a show. Aside from the break they took
during Punk's open but, this match is a lot different than the others on
this disc so far as there's less stalling and faster action. Lots of
unique maneuvers and a lot of back and forth action all done with
precision and excellence. The finish came absolutely out of nowhere as
Mysterio landed a quick backslide to pick up the victory. Great match
with an awesome post match ending.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ***3/4
Match 6: Fatal 4 Way 2010 - World Heavyweight Championship - Jack Swagger (c) vs. Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk vs. The Big Show
This match is for the World Heavyweight Championship as Mysterio gets
another opportunity to gain the belt and leave a better mark from his
last reign. The match can be defined as a blah four way match. I'm not
trying to sound to slang but I feel like that's just the best word to
describe things. Yes, there were times where the action picked up and
the paced was fast but in the end, nothing jumped out at me and nothing
really memorable came out which is kind of like the story of this disc
so far. Kane interferes near the end with a casket and attacks CM Punk
which led to Mysterio hitting an unexpected 619 on Swagger to capture
his second World Heavyweight Championship. Obviously not as emotional as
his first win, this win was still great in that he finally won the belt
without the help of anyone if you catch what I'm saying.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ***1/4
Match 7: SmackDown 2010 - Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio
After Del Rio put Mysterio on the shelf for a bit, he was looking for
some revenge with their match here on SmackDown. Things start off with
Mysterio getting the early advantage and basically controlling the
entire match which while sounds weird, kind of makes sense. Mysterio was
hot after Del Rio took him out and has much more experience on him even
though Del Rio got the win the last time. However, once Del Rio got
into the roll of things, the match itself got rolling and didn't look
back. They got out of first gear and had the crowd in the palm in their
hands. All the moves were done crisply and looked wonderful. Mysterio
got the win after announcer Ricardo Rodriguez tried to cause a
distraction which lead to Mysterio knocking him off with Del Rio and
eventually knocking a 619. Great match and a wonderful showcase for Del
Rio on television.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ***1/2
Match 8: WrestleMania XXVII - Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
In a feud that started over Mysterio hitting a 619 on Rhodes which
lead to apparently getting his face ruined, the two took on each other
at the grandest stage of them all. Cody has come a long way from
wrestling pointless matches to having a great one with a star like
Mysterio who dressed as Captain America here at WrestleMania. Some
decent action was filled throughout the match but they just seemingly
couldn't get the ball rolling and the crowd wasn't much into the action.
Rhodes, however, did look pretty impressive with his amazing delayed
suplex on the second rope as well as playing the classic heel by using
his face mask as a weapon. Mysterio later removed that mask and tried to
put it on to which the referee then took it off of him. This gave
Rhodes the chance to capitalize on the turned away referee who then
nailed Mysterio over the head with the knee brace and then hitting his
finisher to pick up the win. A good match but nothing too impressive.
Nice to see Rhodes get the win at the big show.
Winner: Cody Rhodes
Rating: **3/4
Overall Thoughts and Rating:
Another enjoyable disc filled with Mysterio's matches of the latter
part of his ongoing career as well as great sit down interviews. Thumbs
up once again!
