Rey Mysterio - The Life of a Masked Man DVD (Disc 2) Review

From July 21, 2011.

Match 1: WrestleMania 21 - Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero
This is the match that kicked off the big WrestleMania in Los Angeles and featured Mysterio taking on the late Eddie Guerrero. It's also the first time in which tag team champions went against each other at a WrestleMania. Watching this match is like going through a time warp and watching an old school ECW match. This match was absolutely packed with so many amazing maneuvers and really showcased both men's abilities and how they were still able to go out and put on a great old school classic match honoring their roots. Watching matches like this really make me miss how great of a wrestler and person Eddie Guerrero was. Awesome way to start off the show. The only gripe would probably be the time it received, I really wish this match had gone a few minutes longer because then we would have gotten a real classic. Nonetheless, a terrific bout with lots of counters and reversals.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ****

Match 2: SmackDown 2005 - WWE Tag Team Championships - MNM © vs. Rey Mysterio & Batista
The team of Rey Mysterio & Batista challenge the team of Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro for the WWE Tag Team Championships just a month following Eddie's death. Things start off pretty slow with MNM dominating Mysterio early on and pretty much for the good part of the match. Some good moves shown by Mysterio and MNM but nothing to flashy as the fun kicks in once Mysterio makes a hot tag to Batista who then single handedly takes apart MNM as Mysterio lands a 619 on both Mercury & Melina in the process. This leads to Batista hitting a Batista Bomb to pick up the win for his team. Nothing too good but really nice and comforting to see them win the belts.
Winners: Rey Mysterio & Batista
Rating: **3/4

Match 3: No Way Out 2006 - Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton
By winning the 2006 Royal Rumble, Mysterio gained a ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 22. However, the toying of Eddie Guerrero and Mysterio's supposed fluke win caused Mysterio to put his spot in the main event of WrestleMania on the line with Mysterio. Orton played the role of complete bully while constantly toying with Mysterio the entire match while systematically working on his arm which was a nice touch. Mysterio's role was the exact opposite and he did a nice job selling his role as a babyface and gaining a lot of sympathy from the crowd through Orton's dirty tricks throughout the match. Orton picks up the cheap win by rolling up Mysterio and holding onto a rope for leverage. Nice match that was eventually blown away by a championship match they had on SmackDown not too much further away from this one but still a nice match that showcases both Orton as a heel and Mysterio as a babyface.
Winner: Randy Orton
Rating: ***1/2

Match 4: Summerslam 2007 - Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
Returning for the first time since October after being taken out by Chavo in an I Quit match, Rey Mysterio looks to get his revenge at Summerslam 2007. These were the days when JBL was on commentary and how I miss hearing this man on commentary! He puts everybody over greatly and is also really entertaining. Back to the point at hand, Chavo wisely focuses on Rey's leg which he injured back in October of 2006 and pretty much controlled the entire match through this as Mysterio had no way of getting much offense in with an injured leg. Mysterio sold the injury like gold and wasn't able to hit the 619 twice until he went for a third try and nailed it to pick up the win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ***

Match 5: Cyber Sunday 2007 - Stretcher - Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay
Fans chose a Stretcher match over a couple other bland choices which means one must place their opponent on a stretcher and push the stretcher with their opponent over a white line to win the match. Some good exchanges throughout the match that really gave me the feeling that both men were out to hurt one another and ultimately win the match with the nice use of the stretcher. Mysterio was able to also perform a couple really good moves which led to him hitting an outside 619 to which he almost got the win off of but a camera cable restrained the stretcher from moving. That was a very amateur move and really killed the pace but Mysterio eventually went on to pick up the win anyways.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: **3/4

Match 6: No Mercy 2008 - Rey Mysterio vs. Kane
The deal here is that if Mysterio loses the match, he must unmask so I'm sure we all know what the outcome will be. Anyway, I think a lot of people judge this match before actually ever viewing it and that includes myself due to the fact that it just doesn't sound interesting at all. However, this match was quite the surprise and Kane held up his own with the quick Mysterio who did everything in his power to beat Kane which meant bigger moves and smarter wrestling. This tactic got him going to the point where he had Kane out of the ring and was gonna land on top of him but Kane struck him on the way down. This called for a disqualification as Mysterio gets the win that way and Kane walks off. Good match, nothing special.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: **3/4

Match 7: Judgment Day 2009 - Intercontinental Championship - Rey Mysterio © vs. Chris Jericho
Their feud back in WCW is renewed in 2009 as Chris Jericho joins the SmackDown brand and looks to embarrass Rey Mysterio in Chicago. This match was exactly what you would expect, a lot of reversals, fast paces action, and an awesome crowd as Chicago crowds are often always the best for wrestling. Jericho shows off why he is indeed an amazing heel and why he has held the belt more than anyone else early on and throughout basically by toying around with Mysterio but that didn't mean Mysterio would give up without a battle. Mysterio repeatedly reversed move after move from Jericho and did it crisply and precisely to his advantage before finally hitting a 619 which he tried to do earlier on to get the win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Rating: ****

Match 8: SmackDown 2010 - Intercontinental Championship - Rey Mysterio © vs. John Morrison
I'm glad television matches like these are featured on DVDs because I feel like a lot of them are hidden gems and often forgotten about. Just a few days before the Breaking Point PPV, Rey Mysterio received a 30 day suspension so he was booked to lose the title before leaving and John Morrison was the man they called as these two men put on a show. Just an absolute great match that is reminiscent of the early days when wrestlers would go the long distance just for this belt as they would display to us fans their athleticism and talent of this art. Both men took out moves from their arsenals that we've either never seen or haven't seen in a long time such as Mysterio using the top rope as a springboard to land himself upon Morrison or Mysterio trying to land a reverse hurricanrana off the top rope. All these brilliant and back and forth moves finally came to a close when Morrison hit the Starship Pain to pick up the win and the Intercontinental Championship. There were times in this match that it felt like a spotfest but with a hot crowd and such great action, I can't really complain.
Winner: John Morrison
Rating: ****1/4

Overall Thoughts and Rating:
Factor in all the awesome sit down interviews conducted by Matt Striker, this disc is an awesome piece of the DVD. I question some of the match selections on here but there are eight matches on here so it's hard to complain.
Rating: 4/5
